After my professional practice tutorial on monday, a chat with Paul sparked an idea to make my branding all to do with Theatre and how that feeds my practice. I always tend to think of my possible clients and people that look at my work as an 'audience'. In my sketchbook, I started drawing out theatre frames and curtains as a possible border of the type I made the other day...
The thumbnail starred is an idea to have a stage and an audience. This could be used a header for my blog, twitter ect.
However it was the light doodle that directed me towards the final logo. From there I researched and drew out a variation of different theatre lights.
I really liked the circular light above (top left), but I thought about how it would presented on a smaller scale and it occurred to me that many people could mistake them for dart boards...which obviously was not wanted.
The traditional theatre light such as that above (top left) seemed to be the way to go with this logo. I also started to draw out back of heads as possible audience members...
depending on the size of each papercut I was aware that I would probably only have room for a few but decided to draw out a variation of people. I took reference from a variety of vintage photos circa 1950 to link my branding with my current work and another reason being the hair and clothes were more enjoyable for me to draw out.
I realised that all these drawings were of varied size, therefore I needed the help of the photocopier to fix this issue. These were then traced and the silhouettes cut out.
At first I tried out having paper coming from each light to suggest beams of the light. This was the anticipation of the audience members having the same texture as the lights. It was decided that it was way to busy and it would hard for the viewer to make out the shapes of the audience.
Here not all the theatre lights are on view. This perhaps would confuse the viewer as it is not fully clear what they are. You can see below how the slight extra reveal of the lights adds much more context to the image.
In the two above images I have added the 'Emma Sears' type that I created earlier in the week. The whole image is looking much busier than I expected. It definitely is not suitable for a logo, however could be appropriate for the home page of my website?
