Tutorial with Marcus Oakley

It was really helpful getting some feedback from Marcus. I showed him my paper cut work so far and it seemed that he agreed with me about the Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby image in that the background was way too busy for the figures and it would probably would have worked better with a white background. He also brought up a good point about the balance between the background the figures. He stated how he thought each aspect was interesting, however, the figures got lost within the busy background. He pointed out that in my earlier images such as the 'workmen on the roof' and 'the drinking man' where the backgrounds were less finished and more linear drew attention to the figures in the foreground. At first, I found this quite difficult to hear as I really liked the busy backgrounds and the use of the colour, but I can see what he means and perhaps I should consider more linear drawing in the future.

We also talked about the thickness of paper and layering in collage. He suggesting using cardboard, thicker paper and perhaps even stretched canvas for the figures as they are less likely to pucker as I was experiencing in my own work. Also he advised to use better glue or foam pads when attaching the figures to the background as it will for one, look better in presentation and the foam pads will add more shadow and depth to each image.
